**If you are using an accommodation(s) to complete an assignment, you are REQUIRED to fill out a make up work slip. This can be found in the back of the room under the turn it in baskets. Completely fill out the slip. Then staple it to your work and turn it into your class basket OR hand it to me. The reason for this is to ensure that appropriate credit is given and nothing is missed. No slip - no credit/no grade**

What is a 504? A 504 plan, much like an IEP, can help students with learning and attention issues learn and participate in the general education curriculum. The plan outlines how a child's specific needs are met with accommodations, modifications and other services. The goal is to remove "barriers" from learning.

What is an IEP? An IEP is a Individualized Education Program which focuses on specific needs you as a student will require to succeed. It includes special education support and services that the school will provide to help reach your educational goals including modifications and accommodations to guide your progress.

What is ESOL/ ELL? ESOL is English to Speakers of other languages. ELL refers to English Language Learners. Essentially, English is not the primary language, but the secondary.

What if my student has a 504 or an IEP in your class? I highly encourage my students who have an IEP or a 504 plan to utilize it as much as they need. There is a reason for it. A lot of time students either forget or unaware of their full accommodations. Please see a teacher or your guidance counselor for a list. I will never deny a student their right to use the plan. Accommodations are there for students to use as they feel needed. It is the responsibility of the student to ASK to use their accommodations. Keep in mind, these accommodations are provided because the student has demonstrated a need for them. They are NOT to be used a as an "excuse". Any student that does not do work as assigned and waits until the last minute to complete an assignment and uses "accommodations" as their reasoning - their work will NOT be graded until a parent/teacher conference and/or a guidance/teacher/case manager conference has been completed to ensure the students are using their accomodations in an appropriate fashion.

Here are just a few examples of what type of accommodations a student can have and what they mean:

FOR MOST ASSIGNMENTS, DEADLINES ARE DUE BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE CLASS.

- 50% extended time on assignments: If a student has 1 day for an assignment, they get to the end of the next school day. I request that students include +50% extended time when they submit their assignments as a reminder for grading purposes.

- 100% extended time on assignments: If a student has 1 days for an assignment, they get 2 full days..I request that students include +100% extended time when they submit their assignments as a reminder for grading purposes.

- 50% extended time on testing**If a student has 40 minutes, they get 60 minutes.

- 100% extended time on testing**: If a student has 40 minutes, they get 80 minutes.

  • ***Extended time my exceed our instructional time which a student may need to split their test.

  • ***The student should communicate with their other teachers for approval to remain behind to complete the test in my class. I cannot hold a student back from another class.

  • *** I do not recommend a student to use instructional time to make up tests. I offer after-school accommodations on Tuesday/Thursdays from 2-4pm to make up tests . There are also after school buses available for transportation. See the activities office for a bus route.

  • ***If a student has no other option than to use instructional time to make up a test, it is the students responsibility to make up any work or learn any material they miss.

- Teacher copy of notes: Every student is provided a copy of the powerpoint I present to the classroom on Schoology. Because of the length, transitions, overlays, ect, these CANNOT be printed.

- Flexible Setting: Within my class, students will sit in 3-4 person tables for small group
collaboration. I do have single desks available upon request. Other times, students will work independently and in partner settings. If a student needs to use the learning lab for test taking, they need to see me BEFORE they begin a test. Once a test is opened/begins, the student will NOT leave the room. The learning lab is also available for in class assignments too for a more secluded setting.

- Printed Material: If a student requests printed material, they need to see me for it. Some things cannot be printed.

- Preferential Seating: Our classroom is set up with tables for group collaboration. It is up to the student to see me for preferred seating arrangements. I will accommodate the student as needed.

- What if I am an ESOL/ELL student and I am in your class? Rest assured, you have nothing to fear or worry about in my classroom. I will work in tangent with the ESOL department and the student to ensure he or she has every resource they need to succeed. They are also welcome to a variety of accommodations that are offered to the 504/IEP students including: Printed material, preferential seating, flexible setting (including the ESOL lab for testing), and extended time case by case.
